Bird of Paradise
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 30 x 24 x 1.5 in
Last year for Labor Day Chris and I went on vacation to Maui. We hiked through bamboo forests, snorkeled, scuba dived, surfed, swam with sea turtles, and ate a ton of pineapple. I just couldn’t get over how green everything was there. Topical flowers and lush greenery seemed to cover everything. On one of the days during our trip, we went to the top of Haleakala and watched the sunrise, then biked all the way down the mountain to the city of Paia. While we were biking we passed several houses with bird of paradise flowers growing in their front yards. They were absolutely beautiful and so I decided I needed to paint them.
Bird of Paradise grows wild on the islands of Hawaii and to me, this painting captures the beauty and vibrancy I saw in Maui. This bird of paradise painting has a dark green background in contrast to the bright colored flower. I love how different these flowers look compared to other flowers with their pointy orange and blue petals. Bird of Paradise flowers are supposed to represent joy and paradise, so I thought I’d add a little more of that into the world by doing this painting.
